Walk For Life
Every other Saturday, beginning Jan. 22
8-9:00 a.m.
Aiea High School Track
Open to the Public
One of the group’s activities is a walk, open to the public and held every other Saturday from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Aiea High School track. The next date is January 22nd. As the name suggests, this is a lifestyle change designed to continue far beyond their surgery experience, it’s a new way of life. The Walk offers benefits such as camaraderie, encouragement and motivation for patients who are starting out on the road to physical activity as part of their new lifestyle. Participants bring their kids to play, while parents walk and talk. Pali Momi welcomes the public to join in. “It’s easier to adopt a new behavior, when you have someone by your side,” says Christi Keliipio, R.N., Pali Momi Bariatric Surgery Program Director.
Support group members keep track of their progress on and off the track. Every patient is given a pedometer to encourage them to keep walking. A contest is now under way—“The 10,000 Steps”—to see who can meet the challenge of racking up 10,000 steps every day. Members are vying for several winner’s titles. “A little competition never hurts to get us off the couch and moving,” says Keliipio.
